Potomac ABC Recipe

TVP Vegetarian Burgers

Ingredients:

2/3 cup TVP (small, unflavored granules)
1 ¼ cup vegetable broth    
1 egg, beaten       
1 to 1 ½ cups flour             
1 onion, finely diced

1 tbsp barbeque sauce
½ tsp oregano
½ tsp chili powder
¼ tsp cayenne powder
salt & pepper to taste
oil for frying

  1. Bring vegetable broth to a boil. Add TVP, stir and cover. Let sit for 10 minutes, or until all liquid has been absorbed. Drain off excess liquid, if any.
  2. Combine the TVP with the remaining ingredients and stir to combine well. You may need to add a little more than 1 cup of flour to get the mixture to the right sticky consistency.  If desired, you may also add bread crumbs.
  3. Form the mixture into patties and fry in oil on each side until dark brown. (Do not undercook or they will not hold together well).
